COMPUTERIZATION OF GENERAL LEDGER ACCOUNTING OF TINY BUSINESS ENTERPRISES USING PDA/SMART CARD

For IT to make a strong and sustainable in-road in India, it may be essential that the business community internalize IT using battery-operated and pocketable PC as a convenient access device. A local Application Service Provider (ASP) may support the business community for all kinds of business data-handling needs and maintenance.

2-TIER ARCHITECTURE OF THE SYSTEM

FEATURES

1.      Authentication based on PKI Encryption.

2.      2-level security as the data is stored at the ASP end in encoded form.

3.   Features of popularly available commercial accounting packages.

FUNCTIONALITY

Initially a businessman is registered at the ASP-end & is provided with a Smart Card initialized specifically for him. The entire business master-data (e.g. Ledger, Item, Businesses, etc) will be stored in the Smart Card, which are client (businessman) specific. The application can only be logged-on and executed after the successful validation of the user through this Smart Card. The “query” and “daily transactional data” entry (offline / online) is done through the PDA & using the Smart Card. The transactional data is transmitted in an encoded as well as encrypted form to the ASP’s remote server through a dial-up connection. This ensures the secrecy of the business data at any point of time. The ASP ensures the business continuity (routine backup, recovery and other system administration related activities) of the above-mentioned system. Routine statutory financial reports of the business are also provided from the ASP-end.

PLATFORM

Server-End: (ASP)

O/S:                 Red Hat Linux 9.0

RDBMS:          MySQL

Client-End:      Modem, Smart Card enabled PDA (e.g. Simputer)

Low Cost Interactive Multimedia Content Creation :

With the rapid advancement towards convergence of various information delivery systems such as TV, Telephone, Computers and Computer Networks etc. it has become  feasible to offer ‘IT services’ using conventional forms of information delivery systems. The integration of information delivery system with Internet has been a major facilitator for empowering people with information. This will in turn improve the quality of life and also social and economic status of the Indian Masses.

Reinforcement of social integration through Content Creation for Sikkim and North Eastern States is one of few major activities in the process of making this centre a resource centre for multimedia content creation. Development of Content using multimedia as tool in the field of cultural heritage, education, training, literacy, health awareness and hence linking common people to the main stream is the goal.
